A very topical and original story set in the London Olympic village which creates a vivid and realistic picture of the competitors' lives both in and outside the most important competition of their careers. Lee-Potter's heroine Mimi is smart, honest and relatable as she is faced with the return of an old flame from her past on the eve of the Olympics. The novella is fun and packed full of detail, whilst remaining accessible for those of us with only a passing knowledge of show-jumping. The perfect quick read for those who missed out on their Olympic tickets!
The heart-warming story of a young equestrian competitor at the London 2012 games as she fights for a medal. More enchanting perhaps, is her fiery relationship with dashing fellow competitor and former beau Jack Stone. Mimi as the central character is endearingly positive and I really felt invested in her plight as the competition kicked off but in the romantic scenes this story really shines. It was refreshing to see another side to the games and what might go on behind the scenes. A lovely read.
Olympic Flames is appealing because it is filled with all the things that make a feel-good story; romance, sporting victory, national pride. This is especially great because it is also what is most relevant to the millions of people watching London 2012. I think this story would work well as one of those adaptations that they show on the BBC; it could be a nice break from the Olympics but without getting out of the spirit and you wouldn't even have to change the channel! I enjoyed the rich description of London as it really puts you in the story. All the little cultural details make it a very English book and the complicated relationships and sporting troubles that arise during the story make you realise just how human all the athletes really are. Watching the games on television and seeing how spectacular they are makes it seem like it's all happening far away with athletes who are unreachable sporting champions, but Emma Lee-Potter writes in a way that reminds me that the athletes in the Olympics are merely striving for success but prone to mistakes, just like the rest of us. A great story that is well-timed to enhance the spirit of the London Games.
